No fewer than two people have been killed in a fire incident that occured at the High Commission of Canada in the early afternoon of Monday in Abuja.
According to the eyewitness account, the fire broke out while the embassy’s power generating plant was being repaired, engulfing and killing two people who were part of the technical crew.
Two others have reportedly been hospitalised at the National Hospital Trauma Centre due to severe burns.
Reports say the two MIKANO engines were being serviced by a five-man team from JMD company.
It was gathered that the tank of diesel in the generator house, containing 2000 litres exploded which sparked the fire.
The FCT Fire Service was able to contain the fire around 12.30 p.m.
Reacting to the incident, the Acting Director General of FEMA, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim Sabo called for caution in the handling of petroleum products, particularly with the onset of the dry season.
Sabo appealed to residents to always use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of a disaster.
