The Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi has approved over N2.8 billion for the establishment of five modern Almajiri Schools in each of the three senatorial districts.
State Commissioner for Basic Education, Lawan Yunusa Danzomo disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen after the state executive council meeting.
He said Tsangaya schools when completed will enrol at least 12,000 pupils, 4000 from each zone, reducing the number of out-of-school children in the state.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO Jigawa is the fifth State with the highest number of out-of-school children at 784,391.
He explained that the funds (N2,851,797,098) are part of the state’s Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) program and will also be used for the payment of a five-month outstanding allowance for facilitators of Almajiri/Girl child centres, procurement of instructional materials, and capacity-building workshops for the teachers.
He added that the executive council has also approved the award of contracts for the emergency renovation of schools destroyed by flood and storms across the state at the sum of N427m.
The commissioner said the renovation includes blocks of classrooms, hostels, laboratories, wall fences, toilets, and administrative blocks.
