Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has pledged to clear 11-month salary arrears owed teachers under State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB.
He made commitment during 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration at IBB Square in Makurdi, where he was represented by Deputy Governor Sam Ode.
Alia said government would add one month of outstanding arrears to teachers’ monthly salaries until entire backlog is cleared. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising education and improving teachers’ welfare and working conditions.
The governor highlighted other measures in education sector, including recruitment of more than 9,000 teachers, construction and renovation of over 400 classrooms, provision of furniture, implementation of harmonised retirement age and introduction of automated payroll system.
The celebration was held under 2026 Nigeria Union of Teachers theme, “Standing with Teachers, 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Future.”
The NUT also endorsed Alia for second term, citing his administration’s efforts in education, peace and development.
