Senator representing FCT, Ireti Kingibe, has rejected assertion by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, that she will not return to Senate in 2027, saying neither minister’s office nor individual has authority to determine who FCT people will elect.
Kingibe challenged Wike to produce Senate’s Votes and Proceedings showing approval for loans allegedly obtained by FCT Administration.
Her response followed comments by Wike earlier in week rejecting her allegation that FCT Administration obtained loans without National Assembly approval.
Wike had argued that borrowing for capital projects was incorporated into budget and approved. He also said Kingibe would not return to Senate in 2027.
But in statement posted on X on Thursday, Kingibe dared Wike to show evidence.
“I have never been one to be intimidated by insults, threats, or political pressure, and I will not start now,” she said.
“As for not getting approval for loans, I dare the FCT Minister to show people of FCT Votes and Proceedings of the day approval was given. I cannot speak for House of Representatives but I know it was NEVER brought before Senate,” she said.
Kingibe said questioning public borrowing and expenditure is part of legislative responsibility.
“If I raise questions about public borrowing, public funds or conduct of government, it is not act of disrespect; it is part of my duty as legislator,” she said.
“No Minister, no matter how powerful, is above law. No public office holder is above scrutiny,” she added.
She said decision on who represents FCT in 2027 belongs solely to people.
“And no individual has authority to decide by personal declaration who people of FCT will elect in 2027,” Kingibe said.
The dispute dates back to August when Kingibe raised questions about FCT loans between August 2023 and March 2026, citing Debt Management Office records.
