Nigerians in the diaspora can now renew their passports without going to an embassy or consulate. The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has rolled out the Contactless Passport Application System for eligible applicants abroad.
Here are 10 key things to know:
*1. Who qualifies_
It’s for renewals only. First-time applicants and minors still need to visit an embassy/consulate. Your current passport must be the 10-year, 64-page e-passport issued from 2019.
*2. *No physical visit required__
Eligible applicants can complete application, biometric capture, and tracking online from their home abroad.
*3. *Biometrics are captured via your phone__
You’ll use the NIS Mobile App to capture your facial biometrics and the NFC chip on your current e-passport. No fingerprints needed.
*4. *Application is fully online__
You submit your form, upload required documents, and pay fees through the NIS portal before using the app for biometrics.
*5. *Documents needed__
Current e-passport, NIN slip, passport photograph with white background, and proof of address. Additional docs may apply depending on name changes.
*6. *Delivery is by courier__
Once approved, your new passport will be delivered to your address abroad via a courier service. Delivery fees are paid during application.
*7. *Tracking is available__
You can monitor your application status online from submission to printing and dispatch.
*8. *Processing timeline__
NIS says processing takes a few weeks after successful biometric capture. Timelines may vary by country and courier.
*9. *. Some Applicants Will Still Need To Visit A Mission
Those who do not qualify for contactless renewal will be redirected to schedule a physical appointment at the appropriate Nigerian mission.
*10. Where to start_
Go to the official NIS Contactless Passport portal and download the NIS Mobile App from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Beware of fake sites and agents.
Your current passport is cancelled in the system once the new one is issued. Don’t travel with both.
This process is aimed at cutting travel costs, long queues, and wait times for Nigerians abroad who just need to renew.
