…Team gets hero’s welcome in Benin, secures CAF Women’s Champions League ticket
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo has announced a ₦50 million cash reward for Edo Queens following their victory at the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifiers in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The Governor received the team at Government House, Osadebey Avenue, after a colourful victory parade from the Benin Airport through Airport Road.
The reception drew government officials, sports administrators, stakeholders, and jubilant supporters.
The Queens successfully defended their WAFU-B title after defeating Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies in a dramatic final decided by penalties. The triumph earned the Nigerian champions a place in the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League in South Africa.
Commending the team, Governor Okpebholo praised the players, coaches, technical crew and management for their resilience and fighting spirit.
“Our young women are showing the world what determination, discipline and hard work can achieve,” the Governor said. “This victory is more than just two trophies. It is a proud moment for Edo State and Nigeria, and a reminder of what our young people can achieve when they are given the right support and opportunities.”
He noted that the team had earlier won the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League title before adding the WAFU-B crown.
With the WAFU-B title secured and a continental ticket in the bag, Edo Queens will now shift focus to the CAF Women’s Champions League in South Africa, where they will compete against Africa’s elite women’s clubs.
