Troops operating under the Joint Task Force Operation Fansan Yamma have eliminated several terrorists, recovered weapons and intercepted a major explosives smuggling operation in Zamfara State.
The Media Information Officer, Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday following offensive operations conducted across the region.
According to the statement, Sector 2 troops on a clearance operation in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area engaged terrorists near Garin Kaso in a fierce firefight, killing two insurgents on the spot.
Troops recovered two rifles, two magazines, nine rounds of ammunition and two motorcycles. Shortly after, another group of insurgents attempted a counter-ambush from hidden positions but troops repelled the attack and inflicted heavy casualties, forcing the remaining fighters to flee.
In a separate interception on the same day, troops at a snap checkpoint in Gusau arrested a 57-year-old man, Sani Umar, allegedly transporting 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives.
The explosives were reportedly intended for criminal elements in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The suspect, the vehicle and the recovered explosives have been taken into custody for further investigation.
The Theatre Command said the coordinated operations reflect the military’s ongoing offensive strategy in the North-West, aimed at raiding insurgent hideouts and cutting off supply chains for weapons and explosives in order to restrict the movement and operational capacity of terrorist groups in the region.
