The Chairman of the National Population Commission, NPC, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, has called for stronger public procurement systems across Africa, stressing the need for transparency, technology adoption, and compliance with international best practices.
Speaking on Monday, August 4, 2026, at the African Public Procurement Policy and Compliance Summit, APPPCS, in Accra, Ghana, Dr. Yusuf said effective procurement governance is critical to institutional efficiency, sustainable development, and public trust in government.
The four-day summit themed “Strengthening Public Procurement System in Africa: Advancing Compliance Strategy, Policy Evaluation and Institutional Synergy” was organised by LeadBold Consulting in collaboration with the Senate Committee on Public Procurement.
Dr. Yusuf noted that procurement is central to the NPC’s operations, adding that accountable processes are essential for the delivery of censuses, digitisation of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics, and other national programmes.
“As African countries embrace digital transformation, there is an increasing need for procurement systems that are transparent, technology-driven, and aligned with best practices,” he said.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Procurement, Senator Olajide Ipinsagba, said Nigeria’s Public Procurement Act provides a solid legal foundation for competition, fairness and value for money.
He added that as Africa advances the AfCFTA, procurement systems must evolve to support cross-border trade and industrial development.
The summit brought together policymakers, legislators, procurement professionals and development partners from across the continent.
