The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has constituted a fact-finding committee to investigate the poor performance of the country’s national teams in international competitions.*
The move comes after the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the NFF Communications Department said in a statement.
According to the federation, the committee will examine the “unwholesome poor run” of Nigeria’s national teams, with particular focus on the Super Falcons’ failure to secure a place at next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
The ten-time WAFCON champions and current holders were eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the ongoing tournament in Morocco. Nigeria subsequently lost 2-1 to South Africa in a playoff for a place in the Inter-Confederations Playoffs later this year.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s run of appearances at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991. The NFF described it as a major setback for a team once regarded as “the supreme power of African women football”.
Members of the committee are former Nigeria U20 coach and President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Ladan Bosso; former Super Falcons captain and FIFA World Cup star, Desire Oparanozie; former Super Eagles captain and AFCON winner, Mutiu Adepoju; and former FIFA referee, Dr Alex Mana.
Chairman of the Sokoto State Football Association, Mallam Mohammed Nasir Sa’idu, will serve as secretary.
The committee is expected to identify the factors behind Nigeria’s recent struggles and make recommendations to guide the federation’s response.
