President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Flamingoes for making history as the first African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, following their 2-1 victory over Japan in the final held in Rabat, Morocco.

Receiving the news upon his return from political engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, the President hailed the maiden triumph as a proud milestone for the nation and a landmark achievement for African women’s football.

“What wonderful news to return home to! Our young girls have conquered the world and given Nigerians everywhere another reason to celebrate our great country,” President Tinubu stated.

“To our gallant Flamingoes, I say congratulations. You have shown courage, discipline, determination and the Nigerian spirit of never giving up.”

Recalling the team’s tournament run, the President commended the players for fulfilling their promise after the semifinal victory, noting that their resilience and teamwork carried the national flag to the pinnacle of global youth football.

“Your victory is an inspiration to millions of young Nigerian girls who dream of achieving greatness. You have shown them that with hard work, opportunity and determination, they too can reach the highest levels of achievement. Today, Nigeria celebrates you. You have written your names in gold, and your country is immensely proud of you.”

Tinubu specifically praised goalscorers Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku for their decisive contributions in the final, while also extending appreciation to the technical coaching crew, the Nigeria Football Federation, and the National Sports Commission.

Reaffirming his administration’s support for sports infrastructure, the President pledged continued investment in grassroots talent development to expand competitive opportunities for young Nigerians, particularly female athletes.
