The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, has clarified that the Monday, June 22 Mushin explosion was caused by mechanical failure, not a bomb as speculated.
The CP made the clarification while addressing residents and journalists at the scene, urging calm and dispelling speculation of a terrorist attack.
He said detailed investigations carried out by security operatives found no evidence linking the incident to any form of explosive attack.
According to Fatai, forensic examinations conducted at the scene did not uncover traces of explosive substances, detonators, initiation mechanisms, explosive residues or other materials typically associated with bomb explosions.
He explained that preliminary findings indicated that the incident resulted from the sudden release of pressure from a mechanical component located outside the affected vehicle.
The force added that the pressure impact caused the front passenger-side glass panels of the vehicle to shatter, leaving the occupant with minor injuries.
Following the outcome of the investigation, the police officially classified the occurrence as a mechanical explosion and assured residents that there was no indication of terrorism or any coordinated explosive attack linked to the incident.
The command further urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.
