The Federal Government has secured the release of six Nigerian nationals who had been detained in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 over alleged economic crimes.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the development in a statement by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Friday, June 26.
According to the ministry, the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan confirmed that four of the detainees were released on June 22, while the remaining two regained their freedom on June 23 following sustained diplomatic and consular engagements with the Ivorian authorities.
The ministry attributed the successful outcome to the efforts of the Nigerian Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire, led by Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa, for maintaining consistent engagement with relevant institutions in the host country.
It said the embassy ensured regular consular access to the detained Nigerians, monitored their welfare throughout their detention and held continuous discussions with the Ivorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice and other relevant authorities to facilitate their release.
The ministry commended the ambassador and members of staff of the embassy for their commitment to resolving the matter.
It also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation, noting that the cordial relationship between both countries contributed significantly to the successful resolution of the case.
The ministry reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad.
It stated that “The Federal Government of Nigeria remains firmly committed to the protection of the rights, welfare and dignity of Nigerian citizens abroad.”
According to the statement, “Through its diplomatic missions worldwide, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to provide consular assistance and engage host governments through established diplomatic channels to safeguard the interests of Nigerians wherever they may reside.”
The ministry further reassured Nigerians living overseas that their welfare remains a key priority of Nigeria’s foreign policy.
It added, “The Ministry wishes to reassure Nigerian nationals overseas that the welfare and protection of citizens remain a cardinal priority of Nigeria’s foreign policy,” while urging Nigerians travelling or residing abroad to obey the laws of their host countries and maintain contact with the nearest Nigerian diplomatic or consular mission whenever necessary.
