The Kebbi State Police Command says it has commenced an investigation into reports alleging that the Sai Malam group has resurfaced in Argungu, assuring residents that security agencies are working to establish the facts behind the claims.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Friday, June 26, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, following reports suggesting that the group had resumed activities in parts of the state.
According to the command, intelligence gathering and verification are already underway, adding that investigations remain ongoing and no conclusions will be drawn until all available information has been thoroughly assessed.
The police also dismissed claims that the Sai Malam group has been officially designated a terrorist organisation, stressing that no such proscription currently exists under Nigerian law.
The command, however, recalled that some individuals allegedly linked to the group were arrested and prosecuted in Zuru in February 2026 over alleged criminal activities.
During the investigation, security operatives reportedly recovered suspected counterfeit currencies, including the Nigerian naira, United States dollar, CFA franc and Libyan dinar.
Investigators also recovered items believed to be connected to ritual or occult practices, alongside other materials considered relevant to the case.
The police, however, noted that no firearms were recovered from the suspects throughout the investigation.
Residents Urged To Remain Calm
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kebbi State, the command said it would continue to enforce the law and ensure anyone found involved in criminal activities is prosecuted in accordance with due process.
The police also appealed to residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing panic, and continue providing credible intelligence that could assist ongoing investigations.
