…Says due process will be followed, pledges cooperation with civil authorities
The Nigerian Army says it has commenced an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, currently posted to Headquarters 3 Division, Jos.
In a statement issued on Saturday, September 12, the Army said the officer has been accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old deaf and non-speaking girl, impregnating her and fathering a child with her. Reports claim the minor was living under the officer’s family care in Taraba State and is the younger step-sister of the officer’s wife, Blessing Essien.
The Army stated that it takes all allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness and has initiated appropriate steps to establish the facts.
“As the allegation is currently under investigation, it would be inappropriate to make definitive comments on the culpability of any individual at this stage,” the statement said.
It added that the Army remains committed to due process, fairness, and the protection of the rights and dignity of all parties involved.
The military also disclosed that relevant civil authorities are already handling the matter and that the Army will cooperate fully to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation in accordance with extant laws.
