FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the independence of world football’s judicial bodies amid scrutiny over the decision to overturn the suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun.
The controversy followed FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee decision to reverse a red card suspension for the forward. The move sparked debate over timing and possible political influence, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed he had intervened in the matter.
In a formal statement issued on Monday, Infantino emphasized that FIFA’s judicial institutions operate with complete autonomy, applying the FIFA Disciplinary Code based strictly on facts and regulations, independent of the organization’s leadership.
While Infantino confirmed he had discussed the case with President Trump, he categorically denied that the conversation influenced the outcome. He noted that he maintains regular contact with world leaders regarding various issues, including the FIFA World Cup, but insists he consistently informs them that disciplinary matters are handled through established, independent legal processes.
“I did receive a call from President Donald Trump, just as I receive calls from heads of state, government officials, football stakeholders, and business executives from around the world,” Infantino stated. “During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies.”
The FIFA president acknowledged that internal disciplinary rulings can sometimes be polarizing, noting that he occasionally agrees or disagrees with decisions personally. However, he stressed that his role is to uphold the integrity of the institution and respect the autonomy of its judicial committees.
The decision has revived long-standing debates regarding FIFA’s governance and the pressure placed on its independent structures.
While the organization maintains that no external representations influenced the ruling, the incident has drawn significant attention due to the high-level communication between the FIFA president and the sitting U.S. leader regarding an active disciplinary case.
