A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, has ordered the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7 to investigate Senator Francis Fadahunsi over alleged inciting comments ahead of the Osun State governorship election.
Presiding Magistrate, Farida Ibrahim, directed the police to conduct a full inquiry into the criminal complaint and submit an official report to the court within two weeks.
The order followed a complaint filed by Pelumi Olajengbesi, Spokesperson of the Osun State Governor’s Campaign Council. In the complaint, Olajengbesi alleged that Senator Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, appeared in a viral video urging political violence and attacks against members and supporters of the Accord Party.
In a parallel move, Olajengbesi’s legal team has threatened a ₦10 billion defamation lawsuit against the lawmaker. They are demanding an immediate retraction and public apology over broadcast interviews in which Fadahunsi alleged that Olajengbesi sponsored violent cult groups.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Government, through the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, SAN, has filed a suit at the High Court in Osogbo against the Inspector-General of Police and the State Commissioner of Police.
The state is seeking a court order to compel law enforcement to secure and forensically examine the viral video, probe the source of the alleged threats, and put in place protective measures for citizens ahead of the governorship poll.
Senator Fadahunsi was earlier questioned and released by police authorities over the matter. He now faces mounting calls for formal criminal prosecution if investigations confirm the allegations.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled for Saturday.
