The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, has suggested that some students may be benefiting from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, without their parents’ knowledge.
Oyedele made the remark on Wednesday in Abuja during a media briefing, while responding to a journalist who said none of his three children in school had received NELFUND support and that they were unaware of any classmates who had.
The minister said the children might not be telling their father the full story. He advised the journalist to ask them directly if they had applied and to request proof of any application submitted.
He cited videos circulating online of students celebrating after receiving support under the scheme. Oyedele noted that NELFUND goes beyond tuition to include an interest-free monthly stipend, which he described as a significant benefit amid high inflation.
According to him, eligible students can access up to N1.5 million through the programme.
The minister urged parents who are unsure about the process to assist their children to apply via the NELFUND website or visit the Ministry of Finance for help.
He also highlighted a regional disparity in applications, saying uptake has been higher in northern Nigeria than in the south.
He attributed the gap to greater public skepticism toward government programmes in the south.
Drawing from his experience running a foundation for underprivileged students, Oyedele said some beneficiaries had continued to seek his help even after he directed them to NELFUND.
He said he later confirmed they had received approval alerts after he sent them the application link.
