The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, has cautioned corps members against sharing unverified information on social media, urging them to confirm the authenticity of content before reposting, especially with the 2027 general elections approaching.
Nafiu gave the warning on Wednesday during an inspection of the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Katsina State. He charged corps members to develop critical thinking and scrutinise online posts before sharing or commenting.
“Do not believe everything you see on social media. Before you share, think through it. Check the picture and ask when it was first taken and whether there has been any manipulation,” he said.
The DG cited cases of old photographs and videos being circulated as recent incidents involving the scheme, describing them as examples of how misinformation can mislead the public.
He also warned about AI-generated and digitally manipulated content, saying advancing technology has made it harder to distinguish real material from fake ones.
Nafiu said the orientation programme is designed not only to instill discipline and teamwork but also to produce responsible citizens with sound judgment.
He reminded corps members of the restriction on partisan politics during service, warning them against using social media to campaign for any party or candidate.
“As corps members, you are not permitted to campaign for anyone. Don’t use your social media handle to promote any political parties or political interests,” he said.
The NYSC boss also disclosed that corps members are likely to be engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission as ad hoc staff for the 2027 elections. He described it as an opportunity to support credible elections.
“Your ballot is just one, but doing that assignment will help hundreds and thousands to fulfil their constitutional mandate,” he added.
Nafiu urged corps members to remain neutral, disciplined and responsible throughout their service year, and encouraged them to take advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme to build capacity for the modern economy.
