The Department of State Services, DSS, has arrested a man for allegedly impersonating one of its officers and using a fake firearm to extort money from motorists and commuters in Abuja.
The suspect, identified as Moferewa Maiye, was apprehended late Wednesday at a hideout near NITEL Junction along Adetokunbo Ademola Way in Wuse II, following credible intelligence.
A security source said Maiye was found dressed in a DSS tactical uniform and in possession of a fake pistol at the time of arrest. He had allegedly been using the uniform and weapon to intimidate victims and collect money from them.
According to the source, the suspect, who claims to be from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, told investigators that his late brother, Monday Maiye, once served in the DSS. He alleged that the uniform and other items belonged to his deceased brother.
The Service said investigations are ongoing to determine how long the suspect had carried out the impersonation and how he obtained the uniform and tactical equipment.
Maiye remains in DSS custody and is undergoing interrogation.
The DSS noted that the arrest reflects its concern over individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate the public and commit crimes.
