….CP Nnanna Vows Accountability
The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive review of the operational circumstances surrounding the recent incident at Onitsha Head Bridge, where some persons allegedly resisted arrest and sustained gunshot injuries.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, said the review will evaluate the strategy, conduct and deployment of the personnel involved to determine whether established operational procedures, rules of engagement and professional standards were fully complied with.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 20, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the CP reiterated the command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights in policing.
He stressed that officers must exercise restraint, sound judgment and professionalism, especially during sensitive operations involving members of the public.
“While police personnel have a statutory responsibility to prevent crime, maintain public order and effect lawful arrests, such duties must at all times be carried out within the framework of the law and established operational guidelines,” the statement said.
The Commissioner directed that appropriate medical attention be given to the injured victim, while efforts continue to establish the full and objective facts of the incident.
CP Nnanna assured residents of Anambra that the command remains committed to people-oriented policing and will protect officers who act professionally within the law.
He added that the command will also continue to employ lawful and proportionate measures to protect government facilities, critical infrastructure and citizens’ means of livelihood.
The command urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the ongoing review to run its course, noting that the outcome will guide any further administrative or operational action.
