Nigeria’s Super Eagles came from a goal down to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying opener at Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, on Friday.
Madagascar stunned home crowd in 16th minute when El Hadary Kari put visitors ahead, assisted by Rayan Ponti.
Super Eagles returned for second half with greater intent and were rewarded in 65th minute when Moses Usor equalised following pass from Semi Ajayi.
Nigeria managed remainder of game to secure 2-1 victory and begin qualifying campaign with three points.
The hosts dominated stats, recording 22 shots to Madagascar’s four and 55 percent possession. Nigeria also registered four big chances compared to Madagascar’s one.
Super Eagles made several substitutions as match progressed, with Moses Simon, Terem Moffi, Tolu Arokodare and Bright Osayi-Samuel among those introduced.
Madagascar also made series of changes in effort to find equaliser, but Nigeria held on.
The victory at 30,000-capacity Uyo stadium gives Super Eagles important start to AFCON qualification campaign.
