Police in Cross River State are searching for a man who allegedly attacked his mother and set her on fire, accusing her of using witchcraft to kill his infant daughter.
The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Etim, is said to have carried out the attack on Friday, August 14, 2026, at his mother’s home in Ojuah community, Akamkpa Local Government Area.
Sources said Etim’s daughter died earlier that day. He later went to the house of his mother, Mrs. Atim Eyo, with fuel and a lighter. According to a witness, an argument ensued after Etim accused his mother of being responsible for the child’s death. The confrontation reportedly turned physical when he attempted to strangle her.
The witness said Mrs. Eyo broke free and tried to escape, but Etim allegedly poured fuel on her and set her ablaze.
Neighbours intervened, put out the flames and rushed the injured woman to hospital for treatment.
Confirming the incident, Cross River Police Command spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said officers are actively tracking Etim, who remains on the run.
“Investigations are ongoing and more details will be released to the public once the suspect is apprehended,” Eitokpah said in Calabar.
