Nigeria stands at a critical juncture in its history; a moment that demands strong, visionary leadership to steer the nation toward stability, economic recovery, and sustainable development. Since assuming office in May 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to transforming Nigeria through bold reforms, strategic appointments, and decisive governance. His administration has laid the groundwork for long-term prosperity, and for Nigeria to fully reap the benefits of these foundational efforts, President Tinubu must continue in office beyond 2027.

Bold Economic Reforms: Pain Today, Gain Tomorrow

President Tinubu’s administration embarked on necessary but difficult economic reforms aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth. The removal of the fuel subsidy, though initially painful, was a courageous step to free up resources for infrastructural development and social investments. Similarly, the unification of the exchange rate was a critical move to stabilize the economy, attract foreign investment, and curb arbitrage.

These reforms, though met with short-term hardships, are designed to create a more resilient economy. History shows that nations that endure tough reforms emerge stronger—just as Indonesia and India did after their economic liberalizations. President Tinubu’s policies are setting Nigeria on a similar path, but continuity is essential to ensure these measures yield their full benefits.

Talent Hunt and Competent Leadership

One of President Tinubu’s most commendable traits is his ability to identify and empower competent individuals. His appointments reflect a keen eye for talent, placing experts in key sectors such as finance, security, and infrastructure. Ministers like Wale Edun (Finance), Bosun Tijani (Communications & Digital Economy), and Dele Alake (Solid Minerals) exemplify his commitment to meritocracy.

Unlike previous administrations where political loyalty often overshadowed competence, Tinubu’s leadership prioritizes capability. This approach must continue to ensure that Nigeria’s institutions are strengthened by the right people. Disrupting this momentum in 2027 would risk derailing the progress made so far.

Security and Stability: A Work in Progress

Security remains a major challenge, but President Tinubu’s administration has taken concrete steps to address it. The appointment of new service chiefs, increased funding for defense, and strategic partnerships with international allies demonstrate a proactive approach. While results may not be instantaneous, security improvements require sustained efforts.

Changing leadership in 2027 could disrupt ongoing counterterrorism operations and weaken the gains made. Continuity is crucial to ensure that security strategies are fully implemented, leading to lasting peace.

Infrastructure and Industrialization: Building Nigeria’s Future

The Tinubu administration has prioritized infrastructure development, recognizing its role in economic growth. Projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail line, and the revitalization of power plants are testaments to this commitment. These initiatives will boost commerce, create jobs, and enhance connectivity.

Infrastructure projects take years to complete, and a change in leadership could lead to abandoned projects; a recurring problem in Nigeria. Allowing President Tinubu to continue ensures that these critical projects are seen through to fruition.

Foreign Policy and Global Reputation

Under President Tinubu, Nigeria has regained its voice on the global stage. His active participation in international forums, diplomatic engagements, and efforts to attract foreign investment have improved Nigeria’s standing. His leadership at ECOWAS has also reinforced Nigeria’s role as a regional stabilizer.

A sudden change in leadership could disrupt these diplomatic gains. Consistency in foreign policy is vital for maintaining investor confidence and geopolitical influence.

The Danger of Premature Transition

Nigeria’s history is littered with examples of administrations that started strong but were cut short, leading to policy reversals and stagnation. The Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) of the 1980s, though necessary, was abandoned due to political pressure, prolonging Nigeria’s economic woes.

President Tinubu’s reforms need time to mature. Switching leadership in 2027 could lead to policy inconsistency, scare away investors, and reverse the progress made. Stability is key to national development.

The Case for Continuity.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first term has been one of laying foundations—difficult but necessary reforms, strategic appointments, and long-term planning. Like a builder who must complete the structure he started, Nigeria needs Tinubu to continue beyond 2027 to consolidate these gains.

The journey to a prosperous Nigeria is a marathon, not a sprint. The seeds planted today will only bear fruit if nurtured with consistency. For the sake of Nigeria’s future, President Tinubu must continue in 2027. The nation cannot afford to gamble away its progress on the altar of political expediency.

Let us stay the course. Let us build a Nigeria that works for all.
