The recent formation of a new coalition within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been hailed by some as a bold step toward unity and electoral viability. However, beneath the surface of this political maneuver lies a web of contradictions, unresolved conflicts, and deep-seated liabilities that threaten to undermine its stability and long-term success.

Through extensive interviews with party insiders, political analysts, and disaffected members, this investigation uncovers the cracks in the ADC’s new coalition; exposing the personal ambitions, ideological clashes, and structural weaknesses that could lead to its premature collapse.

A Coalition of Strange Bedfellows: Ideological Inconsistencies

The ADC’s new coalition brings together politicians from divergent ideological backgrounds—some progressive, others deeply conservative, and a few with no clear ideology beyond personal ambition. Sources within the party reveal that this forced unity has already led to behind-the-scenes clashes over policy direction.

“You have former PDP members who believe in big-government solutions sitting with libertarian-leaning defectors from the APC. How do you reconcile that in a single campaign?” asked a high-ranking ADC official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

This ideological incoherence risks confusing voters and weakening the party’s messaging, making it difficult to present a united front against dominant parties like the APC and PDP.

The Burden of Defectors: Trust Deficit & Past Baggage

A significant portion of the coalition comprises defectors from other parties, many of whom carry heavy political baggage. Some have been accused of corruption, electoral malpractice, or betraying previous alliances. Their inclusion has sparked resentment among longstanding ADC members who view them as opportunistic rather than committed to the party’s ideals.

“How do you sell a candidate to the public when their name is still associated with scandals from their previous party?” lamented a grassroots ADC organizer in Lagos.

Worse still, many of these defectors have not fully severed ties with their former parties, leading to suspicions that they might abandon the ADC if offered better incentives elsewhere.

Leadership Tussles & Ego Clashes

Multiple sources confirm that the coalition’s formation was marred by intense power struggles. Key figures within the ADC are reportedly jostling for control, with some new entrants demanding automatic tickets or influential positions in exchange for their support.

“There’s no real unity—just a temporary alliance of convenience,” disclosed a former ADC state chairman. “Once the elections draw closer, these factions will turn on each other.”

This internal discord has already delayed critical decisions, including the selection of candidates for upcoming elections, further weakening the coalition’s cohesion.

Weak Grassroots Mobilization: A Paper Tiger?

Despite the hype around the coalition, investigations reveal that its grassroots structures remain weak. Many state chapters are plagued by infighting, poor funding, and a lack of clear mobilization strategies. In contrast to the well-oiled machinery of the APC and PDP, the ADC’s new alliance risks being outmatched in voter outreach and campaign logistics.

“We don’t have the resources or the discipline to compete at the national level,” admitted a youth leader in the South-East. “The coalition looks good on paper, but on the ground, it’s a different story.”

Voter Perception: A Coalition Without a Clear Identity

Perhaps the most damaging liability is the coalition’s undefined identity. Is it a progressive alternative? A rebranded version of old politics? Or simply a gathering of politicians who couldn’t find space in bigger parties?

Without a compelling narrative, the ADC risks being perceived as just another political experiment—one that voters may ignore in favor of more established options.

Can the ADC Coalition Overcome Its Liabilities?

While the new ADC coalition presents itself as a fresh force in Nigerian politics, its structural flaws, ideological contradictions, and trust deficits raise serious doubts about its sustainability. Unless the party can resolve its internal conflicts, purge itself of opportunistic elements, and present a coherent vision to the electorate, this much-touted alliance may end up as another footnote in Nigeria’s history of failed political mergers.

For now, the ADC’s future hangs in the balance—between genuine transformation and inevitable disintegration.
