Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after leading the country’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Shettima, who departed Abuja on September 20 on President Bola Tinubu’s mandate, delivered Nigeria’s national statement at the General Debate where he renewed call for reform of the UN Security Council, including permanent representation for Africa.
The Vice President also participated in high-level side events on Africa’s mineral resources, education financing, climate support and multilateral cooperation.
At the Africa Minerals Strategy Group roundtable, he advocated processing and value addition to Africa’s mineral resources rather than continued dependence on raw exports.
At an education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to education as investment in human capital and backed the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign.
He also met with Nigerians in the diaspora to discuss their role in national development.
The 81st UNGA was held under the theme: “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
