Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have crushed coordinated multi-directional assault by Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists in Kukawa, Borno State, neutralising over 25 terrorists and recovering arms and ammunition.
The terrorists, who attacked troops of 101 Special Forces Battalion in large numbers from four different flanks, met stiff resistance as troops responded decisively with superior firepower, tactical manoeuvre and effective battlefield coordination.
Supported by Air Component, troops overwhelmed terrorists, inflicted heavy casualties and forced surviving elements to flee in disarray. Preliminary assessment indicates over 25 terrorists were neutralised, with 14 bodies recovered so far.
During exploitation of area, troops recovered cache of arms and ammunition, including six AK-47 rifles. Further exploitation is ongoing to recover additional weapons, track fleeing terrorists and prevent them from regrouping.
Regrettably, some gallant soldiers paid supreme sacrifice during encounter.
In a statement on Tuesday, Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, said Nigerian Army extends heartfelt condolences to families of fallen heroes.
“Their courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty will remain enduring testament to their service to nation. May their souls rest in peace,” he said.
He said decisive defeat of assault underscores combat readiness, resilience and fighting effectiveness of Nigerian Army troops in North East Theatre, demonstrating growing effectiveness of air-ground synergy and joint operations in disrupting terrorist activities and denying them freedom of action.
“The Nigerian Army remains unwavering in its determination to sustain operational pressure on terrorists and other criminal elements. Troops will continue to conduct aggressive patrols, intelligence-led operations and coordinated offensive actions with sister Services and other security agencies to dismantle terrorist networks, protect communities and safeguard nation.”
