Popular Nigerian skit maker and digital content creator Maryam Apaokagi, widely known as Taaooma, has opened up about balancing personal hardships with her public role as a comedy creator, while detailing her ongoing transition into long-form filmmaking.

Speaking on her journey in the entertainment industry, Apaokagi discussed the creative demands of portraying multiple characters, navigating personal challenges while maintaining production schedules, and leveraging her platform to address social issues such as bullying.

Managing Dual Realities and Character Performance

Taaooma, known for performing several distinct roles within a single production, described the process of switching rapidly between personalities as a mentally demanding task that relies heavily on observation of everyday Nigerian life. She noted that while her characters draw inspiration from various people, her central persona, “Tao,” remains the closest reflection of her natural self.

Addressing the balance between her personal life and career, the creator acknowledged that maintaining a public comedy presence during difficult personal seasons requires strong support systems and intentional discipline. She highlighted that content creators frequently face tight deadlines and public expectations regardless of private difficulties.

Storytelling, Bullying, and Shift to Feature Films

Detailing her evolution beyond short-form skits, Apaokagi emphasized that she has always viewed herself primarily as a storyteller. Her recent feature project, Terms and Conditions, explores the long-term psychological impacts of childhood bullying, a theme influenced by her own past experiences.

She explained that shifting into feature films allows for deeper narrative development and emotional resonance compared to short digital sketches, offering audiences an opportunity to connect with broader social themes through cinematic storytelling.

Industry Dynamics, Motherhood, and Longevity

Apaokagi also touched on her personal growth, noting that motherhood has significantly altered her approach to time management, career decisions, and personal balance.

Commenting on broader trends within the digital creation space, she expressed a firm belief in building a sustainable brand through originality and consistency rather than relying on online controversies or provocative content. She highlighted the importance of:

Authenticity: Maintaining audience trust through consistent quality rather than chasing short-term viral trends.

Cultural Preservation: Collaboration with veteran actors to bridge generational gaps and preserve Nigerian cultural heritage.

Technology in Art: Viewing emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, as tools to enhance production efficiency rather than replacements for genuine human emotion and experience.

Looking ahead, Apaokagi stated her commitment to expanding her reach as a filmmaker, aiming to build a lasting legacy centered on impactful storytelling and meaningful engagement with her audience.
