The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has urged federal and state governments to immediately release funds for the implementation of the newly signed 2026 collective bargaining agreement, including all outstanding salary arrears.
In a communiqué issued at the conclusion of its 55th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, SSANU highlighted that the June 29, 2026 agreement secured a 35% salary increase under the Consolidated Non-Teaching Staff Salary Structure (CONTISS).
The accord also provides for enhanced earned allowances, improved staff training, and structured career progression for qualified degree holders up to CONTISS 15.
Signed by SSANU National President Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, the union demanded the immediate activation of an Implementation Monitoring Committee to oversee compliance and prevent victimization or discrimination against members. The NEC expressed concern over university administrations that have delayed paying the 25% and 35% salary increase arrears, urging swift action to alleviate economic hardship among staff.
While welcoming the 2026 Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention of approximately N2.53 billion per public university, SSANU emphasized that statutory government funding and the N1.3 trillion university revitalisation commitment must not be replaced by supplementary allocations.
The union called for transparent accounting of education funds and prioritized spending on campus security, infrastructure, accommodation, and digital technology.
Addressing broader national concerns, SSANU voiced alarm over persistent food inflation and security challenges, calling for equal urgency in rescuing abducted persons across all regions.
The union also reaffirmed its support for decentralized policing with constitutional safeguards, local government autonomy, and fair labor practices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
