Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging defending champions Argentina 1-0 following extra time in a dramatic final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.
The fiercely contested encounter ended goalless after 90 minutes, with Spain dominating possession and creating the better chances against an Argentina side that struggled to threaten in attack.
Argentina were also forced to play extra time with 10 men after Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time of regulation.
The breakthrough finally came in the 106th minute when Barcelona forward Ferran Torres fired home the decisive goal to hand Luis de la Fuente’s side their second FIFA World Cup title.
The triumph sees Spain add the 2026 crown to the title they won in South Africa in 2010, becoming only the second World Cup champions in the nation’s history
With the victory, Spain also make history as the first country to simultaneously hold both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup titles, cementing their status as the dominant force in international football.
Argentina, who were bidding to retain the trophy after lifting it in Qatar four years ago, were denied a fourth world title despite another resilient tournament run led by captain Lionel Messi.
Spain’s victory caps an outstanding campaign in which they eliminated Portugal, Belgium, France and Argentina en route to lifting football’s biggest prize.
