The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education has suspended a lecturer at the Department of Curriculum Studies, Dr. Samuel Abiye, over an allegation of sexual extortion for grades from one of his female students.
Abiye has been placed on three months suspension and on half salary pending further investigation by the institution’s disciplinary committee.
The lecturer was filmed by a female student who he offered to help pass his course and all other courses taught by other academics in their department in exchange for sexual enjoyment.
For the transaction, Abiye was claimed to have directed the female student to meet him at the King James Hotels in the Eagle Cement area of Rumuolumeni, in the PortHarcourt Local Government Area of Rivers.
Instead of complying with the request, the girl submitted her taped discussion with the lecturer to the school authorities.
As a result, the university has ordered that all of Dr. Abiye’s courses for the first semester of 2020/2021 be re-graded through conference marking, which will be overseen by the Dean of Education Faculty.
A statement by the Vice Chancellor, Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, said: “All Abiye’s courses and supervisees have been reassigned to other lecturers in his department.
“The matter has been referred to the University Staff Disciplinary Committee for further investigation to determine his fate.”
The vice chancellor said the institution was determined to keep its corners tidy.
