The House of Representatives Special Committee on Crude Oil Theft is advocating for the establishment of specialized courts to expedite the prosecution of individuals involved in oil theft and economic sabotage.

During a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, lawmakers, security officials, and representatives from the Office of the National Security Adviser reviewed the current legal framework governing the oil and gas sector.

The committee emphasized that existing laws, many of which date back to the military era, are largely obsolete and fail to serve as an effective deterrent against modern, sophisticated criminal networks.

Alhassan Doguwa, Chairman of the committee, highlighted that the conventional judicial process is currently hindered by significant delays, which often lead to unresolved cases and emboldened offenders.

“If we allow these criminal cases to go through the conventional court system, considering the delays involved, many of them will remain unresolved while the criminals escape appropriate punishment,” Doguwa stated.

The committee noted that persistent pipeline vandalism and oil theft have severely impacted Nigeria’s production capacity, leading to substantial revenue losses and diminished investor confidence.

Lawmakers stressed that establishing a dedicated legal channel is essential to align Nigeria’s enforcement mechanisms with global best practices.

The meeting also served to reinforce the need for enhanced inter-agency collaboration between the military, police, and civil defense corps.

However, the committee expressed disappointment regarding the absence of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) from the deliberations, directing the body to appear before the committee to account for its role in addressing these critical challenges.

Moving forward, the National Assembly has pledged to partner with security agencies to modernize the nation’s legal framework and ensure that economic saboteurs face swift and appropriate justice.
