Nigeria Democratic Congress Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, has called for urgent government action over living conditions of more than 1,000 internally displaced persons, IDPs, at Ramin Kura IDP Camp in Sokoto North LGA of Sokoto State.
Obi made call after visiting camp Tuesday, September 29, during two-day visit to Sokoto State. He said he was distressed to find displaced Nigerians living in makeshift shelters and thatched rooms, with some rooms accommodating as many as 10 people.
Former Anambra governor raised concerns over inadequate toilet facilities, lack of primary healthcare centre and absence of basic school for children. He urged government and relevant agencies to immediately address pressing needs.
Obi said improving conditions should go alongside efforts to tackle security challenges that forced residents from ancestral homes, arguing ultimate goal should be to create necessary security conditions for safe return.
“I have always insisted that as long as even one Nigerian lives in an IDP camp, we are all internally displaced,” Obi said, adding Sokoto visit was his 12th visit to IDP camp across Nigeria.
He also called on political office holders to spend holidays within Nigeria to see firsthand difficulties faced by vulnerable Nigerians.
