The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has dismissed a viral video claiming Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database has been hacked.
NIMC, in a statement by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, on Thursday, described the claim as “false and unfounded,” saying the video in circulation is a recycled report from 2024 that was previously debunked.
The Commission said its National Identity Database (NIDB) has not been breached or compromised at any point.
It said the database is protected by robust, multi-layered security infrastructure in line with international best practices.
NIMC urged the public to disregard the video, avoid sharing unverified information, and rely only on its official channels for authentic information.
The Commission also highlighted its new NIN Authentication platform, NINAuth, a web, API and mobile verification service that requires explicit consent of NIN holders before their data is shared for KYC, SIM registration, immigration, tax and financial transactions.
