The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army to strengthening defence cooperation with the Indonesian military.
Shaibu said the partnership would enhance operational effectiveness, professional training and institutional capacity.
He spoke on Thursday when he received the Defence Attaché of the Republic of Indonesia to Nigeria, Col. Aslam Setiawan, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
The COAS described the defence relationship between Nigeria and Indonesia as longstanding and mutually beneficial, particularly in military education, exchange of operational experience and participation in multinational exercises.
He said sustained military-to-military engagement remains vital to building a professional, adaptable and combat-ready force.
Shaibu called for expanded cooperation in counterinsurgency, emerging technologies and other areas of mutual interest, noting that exchange of expertise would enhance situational awareness and battlefield effectiveness.
He also disclosed that the Nigerian Army is expanding from eight to 12 divisions, a development that would require investments in infrastructure, training and technology.
Earlier, Col. Setiawan reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral defence relations with Nigeria.
He said professional exchanges and multinational exercises, including Exercise Super Garuda Shield, provide opportunities to enhance interoperability and strengthen capacity to respond to contemporary security challenges.
