President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says Nigeria has passed through its own Red Sea and is now set to enter an era of prosperity.
The President stated this in his Independence Day Address on Wednesday to mark Nigeria’s 66th anniversary, with the theme “From Reforms To Prosperity.”
Tinubu likened Nigeria’s economic situation before his administration to a sick patient diagnosed with cancer, saying past leaders chose to dull the pain with morphine instead of treating the disease.
“For too long, Nigeria’s leaders chose morphine while praying for a miracle that never came. They focused on symptoms while allowing the disease to take hold,” he said.
He said his administration chose to excise the cancer, admitting the reforms were difficult with real side effects.
“Our reforms did not create the weaknesses in our economy. They confronted them,” Tinubu said.
The President claimed economic outlook has improved, citing over 4 per cent growth this year, reduced oil theft, falling inflation, rebuilt foreign reserves, stabilized forex market, and over $6bn non-oil export revenue in 2025 – the highest in history.
He said emergency treatment is over and foundation repaired.
“The age of reform has done its work. Now begins the age of prosperity,” Tinubu declared.
“Nigeria has corrected its course. We have passed through our own Red Sea. This is not the time to look back. Let us go forward together “
