The Federal Government has announced N250 million support package for families of 37 victims who died in custody of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Niger State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced support during condolence visit to Niger State Government and people of state over deaths.
Shettima described incident as unfortunate, saying Federal Government shares in pain of bereaved families and remains committed to protecting every Nigerian without distinction.
He said death of 37 young men in NSCDC custody was matter of national concern, stressing that every citizen deprived of liberty remains entitled to protection of state.
According to him, no allegation should diminish that entitlement, while those responsible must be held accountable through due process.
Shettima said Federal Government owes bereaved families justice and answers over circumstances surrounding deaths.
While commiserating with families, Vice President commended Governor Umaru Bago for his efforts in seeking justice for victims.
He, however, appealed to people of Niger State not to politicise tragedy or demonise Governor, urging citizens to remain fair to one another at time of mourning.
Responding, Governor Umaru Bago thanked Vice President for visit, describing it as demonstration of compassion and national solidarity with people of Niger State.
Bago said State Government’s demand for justice was not act of vengeance but moral responsibility to ensure that citizens do not lose their lives in hands of those entrusted with their protection.
He assured Federal Government of state’s cooperation with investigative team constituted to unravel circumstances surrounding deaths, stressing that people of Niger State deserve answers and families deserve justice.
Governor also pledged state’s support for Federal Government efforts to regulate mining activities and protect national assets, while calling for greater investment in safe, legal and dignified economic opportunities for young Nigerians.
Meanwhile, Principal Private Secretary to Governor, Emmanuel Umar, has thanked Vice President for visit, saying his presence demonstrated solidarity with bereaved families and people of Niger State.
He said Federal Government’s intervention had renewed hope of affected families that their welfare and quest for justice were being taken seriously.
