Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced wardrobe allowance of N50,000 each to 20,000 teachers employed by State Government.
Eno also announced that 1,776 registered private schools in state will receive sum of N500,000 each for their teachers, and ordered employment of 2,000 additional teachers in addition to 1,000 who were recently employed.
Speaking on Monday at Uyo Township Stadium during 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration, governor, who declared total state of emergency on education sector, listed his administration’s achievements.
He stated that government had released N15 billion matching grant for SUBEB and intervened in over 100 schools and paid gratuity of teachers, adding that his administration had so far registered 172,000 students for WASSCE and NECO and paid examination fees.
“Every year we have met matching grant of SUBEB, and today we have released sum of N15 billion as matching grant of SUBEB and have intervened in over 100 schools. We have continued to pay gratuity to our teachers.
“We have upheld free and compulsory education and we have consistently paid our WASSCE and NECO fees for all Akwa Ibom sons and daughters. Till date, we have registered 172,000 students for these examinations.
“I have granted approval for another 2,000 teachers, portals will soon be open and you can apply, then you take computer-based test. That you scored 100% in computer-based tests does not automatically convert to automatic employment.
“I have approved another N50,000 per teacher as wardrobe allowance for all 20,000 teachers that are employed. I have been briefed that there are 1,776 registered private schools in Akwa Ibom. For each of those schools registered, they will receive sum of N500,000 so that they can also spread love to their teachers.
“I hereby declare total state of emergency in Akwa Ibom State’s educational system, and Deputy Governor who herself is teacher will work with Commissioner for Education, will set up team and will look at educational sector holistically,” he stated.
Governor named Prof Philip Afangha as Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom University of Education, and urged him to commence work of getting accreditation required for institution, adding that other members of his team would be named before end of week.
He said government would ensure all teachers are armed with tools they require to work, and ordered Interministerial Committee to take over uncompleted building of NUT house and ensure it is completed within six months.
