Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup in dramatic fashion, securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over South Africa in an opening match that will be remembered as much for its card count as its goals.

The tournament opener burst to life in just the 9th minute when the outstanding Julián Quiñones etched his name into World Cup history, scoring the opening goal of the tournament. Quiñones dominated the first half and came agonizingly close to doubling the host nation’s advantage before the halftime whistle.

The second half shifted from a showcase of skill to a disciplinary whirlwind, starting when South Africa’s Sphephelo “Yaya” Sithole was shown a straight red card for bringing down Brian Gutiérrez. With the numerical advantage secured, Mexico’s legendary striker Raúl Jiménez capitalized, slotting home a second goal to seal the victory for the co-hosts.

Things quickly went from bad to worse for Bafana Bafana when Themba Zwane was dismissed for violent conduct, leaving South Africa with nine men. However, he wouldn’t be the last to walk. In stoppage time, Mexican defender César Montes was also sent off following a clumsy challenge, bringing the final red card tally to three.

While a trio of ejections sets a questionable, highly strict precedent for the rest of the tournament, the match itself was hardly a display of brutal or malicious tackles. Sithole’s initial red card, though technically correct, appeared to be more of an accidental tangle of legs, while the subsequent dismissals of Zwane and Montes could have easily been handled with yellow cards by a less lenient referee.

Ultimately, Mexico walks away with a vital three points and a dream start to their home tournament, while South Africa is left to regroup ahead of their next group fixture without two key players
