A 40-foot container truck lost control after developing a mechanical fault and crashed into six other vehicles at Kara Bridge, inward OPIC, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, prompting a swift response from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA.
According to LASEMA, its LRT Tiger Squad stationed at C3 was dispatched at 6:05 a.m. after receiving a distress call and arrived at the scene within the projected response time.
On arrival, responders found seven vehicles involved in the crash:
- 40-foot container truck – no registration number
- White Toyota Hilux – BDG-422XY
- White interstate bus – GBY 784XY
- Hyundai Odyssey – AAA 48BP
- Toyota Sienna – no registration number
- Toyota Highlander – EKY 491HB
- Mitsubishi Hilux – JJJ 977JT
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the 40-foot container truck, while in motion, developed a mechanical fault resulting in loss of control before ramming into the six other vehicles,” LASEMA said. 12fb
The agency activated its incident management protocol and coordinated the scene with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and the Nigeria Police Force to control traffic and prevent secondary accidents.
With the assistance of private tow trucks, the affected vehicles were recovered from the carriageway and moved to the roadside in line with global best practices.
No death or injury was recorded in this morning incident. LASEMA confirmed no life was lost and no one was injured. Traffic flow on the bridge was later restored and LASTMA officials remained on ground to monitor movement. a3ae
The recovered vehicles were handed over to the police for documentation and further action.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, commended the professionalism of the LRT team, LASTMA and the police, saying their coordinated intervention prevented casualties and restored traffic in record time.
He reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to emergency response and urged motorists, particularly operators of articulated vehicles, to maintain their vehicles regularly, comply with roadworthiness regulations, and exercise caution on major highways.
