The Kwara State Police Command has debunked reports of a bandit invasion in Oke-Oyi, Ilorin East LGA warning that false security alerts only cause needless panic.
The Law enforcement authorities also confirmed they have launched an investigation to track down and prosecute the individual responsible for raising the false alarm.
The incident began on Thursday morning when a woman reportedly rushed onto the premises of Government Girls Secondary School, Oke-Oyi, claiming that bandits had arrived in the vicinity.
The unverified claim sparked immediate fear among students and staff, temporarily disrupting academic activities and causing anxiety across the neighborhood.
In response to the distress reports, the Divisional Police Officer for the Oke-Oyi Division immediately mobilized personnel to the scene to assess the threat and secure the school and surrounding areas.
However, a thorough sweep by security forces revealed no signs of an attack, sightings of armed groups, or any form of security breach.
Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed that the report was entirely without factual basis. She emphasized that the entire community remains safe and undisturbed by any hostile actors.
Reacting to the panic, Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, strongly condemned the reckless dissemination of fake security alerts.
He noted that such rumors undermine public confidence and risk diverting critical emergency resources away from genuine security threats.
Commissioner Adekimi stated that legal steps are underway to identify the woman who initiated the scare.
Once her identity is verified, she will be questioned and prosecuted under existing laws regarding the spread of false information and behavior likely to cause a breach of public peace.
While assuring residents that adequate measures are in place to protect lives and property across Kwara State, the command urged citizens to remain vigilant, refrain from forwarding unverified security updates, and report suspicious activities directly to official law enforcement channels.
