Kenya’s President William Ruto on Friday toured the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Complex in Lagos, where he was hosted by Dangote Group President, Aliko Dangote.
The visit comes ahead of the planned groundbreaking of a proposed 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Lamu, Kenya, involving Dangote.
The $16bn facility is expected to expand Kenya’s refining capacity and strengthen petroleum supply in the region.
Ruto and Dangote had earlier discussed the proposed refinery during a meeting on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, with focus on preparations and financing.
Ruto’s visit to the Lagos refinery highlights growing business and economic ties between Nigeria and Kenya, particularly in the energy sector, as Kenya seeks to expand local refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.
