The Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced plans to enhance surveillance along the state’s border with the Republic of Niger to combat rising regional security threats, smuggling, and illegal migration.
During a familiarization tour of various border formations on Friday, the State Comptroller of Immigration, Muhammad Ibrahim, emphasized the necessity of a heightened security posture.
He described the Jigawa-Niger corridor as a critical area for national sovereignty, noting that the command is committed to ensuring that only legitimate travelers and goods enter the country.
“NIS is committed to stepping up as a frontier watch on our border posts amid regional insecurity, smuggling concerns, and cross-border movement towards protecting national sovereignty and security,” Ibrahim stated during his address to personnel.
To achieve this, the Comptroller called for increased collaboration with other security agencies, including the military, police, and customs.
He highlighted that effective border management relies on intelligence sharing, joint patrols, and active support from local community leaders. Ibrahim also charged his officers to maintain high professional standards, reminding them that their conduct reflects the integrity and authority of the service.
Local stakeholders, including the District Head of Maigatari, Alhassan Sani, welcomed the initiative. While commending the NIS for its commitment to securing the region, Sani pledged the community’s continued cooperation in providing credible information to help monitor cross-border activity.
He also advocated for improved logistics and increased manpower to better support officers stationed at remote outposts.
The Comptroller concluded the tour by assuring residents that the command would maintain a visible presence at key entry and exit points, including the Maigatari Land Border Control Post and the Babura Patrol Base, to prevent security breaches and maintain stability in the region.
