The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo State Chapter, has directed churches across the state to suspend late-night activities and fence their properties to protect worshippers from rising cases of abduction.

The directive was contained in a communique issued in Ibadan on Wednesday and jointly signed by the state CAN Chairman, Apostle Elisha Ogundiya, and Secretary, Reverend Samuel Owolabi.

The leadership explained that the urgent measures were prompted by a spike in regional insecurity.

“Due to incessant abduction and kidnapping in recent times, Oyo CAN advises churches to be more security conscious by positioning security personnel and other electronic devices strategically within their premises and neighbourhood,” the communique stated.

“Churches should intensify prayers towards the release of the abductees and suspend late physical activities because of the security situation in the state.”

Beyond halting night programs, CAN advised unfenced churches to immediately prioritize structural gating projects and mandated that trained guards oversee church services.

The body also urged leadership to run thorough background security checks on all guards and essential staff, while enforcing a strict ban on strangers sleeping inside sanctuaries or church compounds.

Turning to the general public, the association advised individuals to minimize long-distance travel and strictly obey Governor Seyi Makinde’s executive order banning commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m.
