The Edo State House of Assembly on Monday, August 17, elected Hon. Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko Edo Constituency I, as its new Speaker.*
Idiaye’s emergence followed the resignation of the former Speaker, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, which was formally acknowledged by the House during plenary.
The sitting was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Osamwonye Atu. It witnessed a brief drama over the position of the member representing Owan West Constituency, but the situation was quickly brought under control.
At the commencement of proceedings, Atu announced the receipt of Agbebaku’s resignation letter.
Thereafter, the member representing Esan South East Constituency, Hon. Sunday Ojiezele, nominated Idiaye for the position of Speaker. The nomination was seconded by the member representing Owan East Constituency, Hon. Eric Okaka.
The Clerk of the House subsequently administered the oath of office on Idiaye, who then assumed leadership of the House.
