A market day in Lassa, Askira/Uba LGA of Borno State, turned violent on Monday after suspected insurgents raided the community during NECO examinations.
Witnesses said gunmen in military camouflage, riding motorcycles, entered the town unchallenged, firing shots and causing panic among residents and students. The attackers abducted an unspecified number of students and teachers and took them to an unknown location. One teacher was confirmed killed.
Residents said soldiers stationed nearby had left for a patrol in Uba, about 16km away, shortly before the raid. Police said investigations are ongoing to establish casualties, while searches continue for the missing.
The attack highlights persistent security threats in southern Borno, where communities have continued to demand stronger protection against insurgent raids.
