The Federal Government has directed stakeholders and relevant agencies to design a comprehensive operational roadmap for the nationwide rollout of the 112 national emergency number.
The directive was issued by Vice President Kashim Shettima while chairing a stakeholders’ meeting on the National Emergency Number 112 Project at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to a statement from the meeting, a committee has been constituted to finalise the roadmap and standard operating procedures for the project.
Members of the committee include the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and other relevant agencies.
The committee is expected to complete its assignment for formal endorsement by the National Economic Council, NEC.
The 112 number is designed to provide a single, nationwide emergency response line to improve coordination among security, health and rescue agencies, and to enhance timely response to emergencies across the country.
The NCC has also disclosed that it has established about 35 Emergency Communications Centres across the country to support the emergency response system, although effective implementation will require cooperation from state governments and emergency response agencies.
The framework will be presented for formal endorsement by the National Economic Council before the nationwide rollout.
