The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old university student for allegedly fabricating and circulating a viral social media report regarding a phantom bandit invasion in the state.
Commissioner of Police Daniel Iyamah announced the arrest during a press briefing in Yenagoa on Friday, identifying the suspect as Promise Etete, a 300-level student at the University of Uyo.
The false report, which surfaced on June 5, 2026, claimed that armed bandits had infiltrated local communities and had been captured by militants who were demanding a N50 million ransom for their release.
According to the police, the misinformation caused significant public alarm, leading to the temporary disruption of academic and commercial activities. In the Polaku community specifically, parents reportedly rushed to schools to withdraw their children due to fears for their safety.
Police utilized digital investigations and technical tracking to identify the suspect. Commissioner Iyamah confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
“Cyberspace is not beyond the reach of law enforcement,” Iyamah stated, warning citizens against the irresponsible use of social media.
He urged the public to verify security-related information through credible sources before sharing it, emphasizing that there was no bandit invasion or threat to public safety in the state.
In a separate briefing, the Command also addressed a case of attempted murder in the Okodi community.
Authorities reported the arrest of Ibobuminaten Oweifa, the son of the community’s traditional ruler, who allegedly accused a resident, Godgift Biko, of theft.
The suspect reportedly bound the victim with wire and set him on fire. The victim was rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The police reiterated their stance against “jungle justice” and violent acts, confirming that the suspect in the Okodi case will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
