The Kano Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has commenced investigation of a suspect arrested with $265,000 at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, MAKIA.
The suspect, Adam Musa Adam, arriving from New Delhi aboard Ethiopian Airlines flight ET941 on September 26, was intercepted during routine screening by Nigeria Customs Service, NCS.
Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Usman Umar Adamu, said his luggage was flagged via Non-Intrusive Inspection Technology, revealing undeclared foreign currency concealed among personal effects.
He said movement of foreign currency above threshold without declaration violates Sections 3 and 4 of Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and Customs Service Act, 2023, adding that the command has intercepted over N2.5 billion undeclared currencies from January to date.
Handing over the suspect and exhibits, Adamu said the action was in line with Section 4(f) of NCS Act, 2023.
Receiving them, Kano Acting Zonal Director, ACE1 Friday S. Ebelo, said the EFCC would investigate and prosecute the case to logical conclusion, describing the handover as interagency collaboration to safeguard economy against illicit flows.
He commended Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and MAKIA officers for vigilance.
