Former Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, has announced his withdrawal from the race for the Cross River North Senate seat in the 2027 general elections, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.

Ayade ambition withdrawal was confirmed in a statement on Monday, where the former governor revealed he was summoned to Abuja for a high-level consultation with the Presidency.

Ayade said that during the meeting, President Bola Tinubu reportedly instructed him to shelve his senatorial aspiration, a request he said he has chosen to obey.

He described the development as difficult, expressing disappointment over what he called political “ill-treatment” despite his past contributions to the ruling party.

The former governor recalled his role as the first All Progressives Congress (APC) governor in the South-South region, noting his efforts in strengthening the party’s presence in Cross River State.

He also highlighted his contribution to President Tinubu’s 2023 presidential election victory, claiming he helped deliver a significant vote margin over the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Despite his loyalty, Ayade said he has not received any federal appointment since leaving office over three years ago.

He further noted that he is currently supporting national efforts through a free transportation initiative aimed at strengthening grassroots engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ayade appealed for reconsideration of the directive, arguing that equitable political representation in his constituency remains a key concern.
