A woman has been apprehended by community members in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State after allegedly throwing her five-year-old child into a river based on advice she reportedly received from a self-acclaimed seer.

According to residents, the woman abandoned the child after claiming that the boy had been unable to walk since birth. The incident sparked outrage among community members, who later detained her and alerted authorities.

Speaking after her arrest, the woman reportedly explained that she had been unable to conceive another child since giving birth to the five-year-old. She said she sought spiritual help from a seer in Benin City, who allegedly told her that the child was a “python” and was responsible for her inability to have more children.

She further claimed that the seer warned her that if she failed to get rid of the child, she would either continue giving birth to children with similar conditions or remain unable to conceive again.

Acting on the alleged spiritual advice, the woman reportedly threw the child into a river.

The incident has generated widespread condemnation, with residents expressing shock over the circumstances surrounding the case. Community members who apprehended the woman called for a thorough investigation and justice for the child.
